With no further adue Life and Times Presents...Mizz Ivy
What is your earliest memory of falling in love with Hip Hop?
I grew up on hip hop; I've always felt really connected to most genres of music, and I actually wanted to be a singer but Hip Hop was the most prominent within my generation so in terms of performance and recording as an artist, I took that route.
I understand you were a creative writer and poet, what was it about putting a beat to your words that inspired you to transition to recording?
There are so many things that I appreciate about the art, that had an influence on my decision but if I had to say what the ultimate motivation was is that I like the part of me I let out when I rap. Over time, my passion and drive took over and and I want to be great!
How was the transition at first?
The idea of rapping and being on stage were the hardest things for me to transition into; however, in multiple areas of music I'm transitioning all the time. I guess its just getting easier now cause I embrace and enjoy the challenges.
How long have you been recording?
About a year now. I recorded my 1st Mixtape "Never Forget" this past February, and recorded my EP "Drive" in July. So as you can see I am going hard at my craft.
Who are some of your influences musically?
Women/Artists like Missy(she's my fav), MC Lyte, Foxy Brown, Aaliyah, Tupac, Jeezy, T.I., Busta Rhymes, Drake, Lil Wayne. I can go on forever about my influences, I respect different things about different artists. I feel inspired by lots of artists and the culture of Hip Hop as a whole.
How many projects to date have you put out, and what were the themes?
To date I have put out 2 projects:
"Never Forget" (Mixtape) Was my first project so there was a bunch of different things going on but mainly I was taking all my struggles and some of the good and putting it into songs.
"Drive" (EP) This project was more about making something for everyone and at the time I was feeling progressive and peaceful as an artist so it was less anger and healing and more positivity.
Are there any albums, or mixtapes forthcoming?
I have yet to release all the tracks off "Driven" as I am only releasing singles from it at this time but I will be working on another EP very soon.
If you could say one thing to Hip Hop (if it were a person) what would u say?
I would write it in a poem, and it would go something like this:
Thank you for the old skool, thank you for the new skool but I miss you in your shell toes, I miss you in your Track Suits. I miss how you made Life Fun, I miss your old funky beats. I miss when you fought for freedom of speech instead of killin and beef. I know a few people who would love to bring you back but more than that, theres an entire generation who need you cause realness is something they've never had.
What do you think about the state of female Hip Hop? Good? Bad?
It is funny cause most people would think its bad right now but I dont see it like that. I see it as a place of opportunity for MC's to really show who they are and for women to keep pushing to get their voice heard.
What do you think will be your greatest contribution?
If I can make real music that people can relate to and learn from then I've contributed as a person but if I can make people relate, learn and want to hear more then Ive contributed as an artist.......I hope to be the contributing artist.
Any shoutouts?
S/O to Jason Bourne for doing this interview, S/O to Toronto(tha grinders) and Vancouver(tha fam) I have a lot of people that push my music within the circles they are in and I respect and love them for that but to name them all would be too much. They know who they are I call em "tha grinders".
